BTS’ Jin Makes Major Move Amid ‘The Astronaut’ Success and Band’s Billboard Record

Jin of BTS is making a big move after the success of his song "The Astronaut" and the band's recent Billboard record.

It was revealed on Friday, per AllKpop, that the K-pop idol had applied to the Military Manpower Administration (MMA) to withdraw his appeal to postpone his military conscription.

His enlistment was delayed until the end of the year, on December 31.

This comes after his management company, Big Hit Music, confirmed in October that all seven members of the world's most successful K-pop boy band are preparing to serve in the military.

Jin, born Kim Seok-jin, is BTS's eldest member, and his conscription was postponed until the end of the year due to a revision to the Military Service Act in 2020.

His decision followed a heated discussion over whether BTS should be granted exemptions in honor of their contributions to boosting South Korea's image. As is well known, all non-disabled men in the country are obligated to serve in the military for around two years.

Why Did Jin Delay His Initial Enlistment Plans?

Jin discussed the delay of his imminent enlistment in a WeVerse live broadcast on October 28, as well as his new solo single, which was released on the same day.

A few days after returning from Argentina, where he performed with Coldplay, the 29-year-old said that he would be drafting documentation for his forthcoming military enrollment.

With several changes before that announcement, Jin explained, as translated by Soompi, "I originally planned to enlist in June but to be courteous to fans, and I waited until our October performance [in Busan]. I didn't want a tearful performance so my [enlistment] announcement was delayed."

Jin 'The Astronaut' Success

The BTS member is making waves with his debut solo single album.

Jin's first official solo single, "The Astronaut," was released last week. However, according to Hanteo Chart, the work sold about 771,000 copies in its first week of release. This makes him only the third solo artist in Hanteo history to sell over 750,000 albums in the first week of release.

The song also had the third-highest first-week sales of any solo singer's album in Hanteo history.

New BTS Billboard Record

Aside from Jin's recent success, BTS has had the most Number One hits on the Billboard Hot 100this decade.

On November 1, the music journal published a list of musicians who have had the most number one singles in the previous 10 years.

With six chart-topping tracks, BTS placed first.

They initially topped the charts in 2020 with "Savage Love," a duet with Jason Derulo, before topping the charts twice more that year with "Dynamite" and "Life Goes On."

"Dynamite" reached number one for three weeks, while "Life Goes On" was number one for only one week.

"Butter," "Permission To Dance," and "My Universe," all released in 2021, remained at the top for 10 weeks, with the final two songs remaining at the top for one week apiece.
