Among the notable winners was KARA, an iconic second-gen girl group who returned as a full group for the first time in 7 years with an EP, "MOVE AGAIN" in November last year.
PSY was also called the "World's Best Artist," the first K-pop star to reach No. 2 on the Billboard main chart "Hot 100" for seven weeks with the global hit, "Gangnam Style" released in 2012.
Another legendary artist who received an honor is BoA, the "Star of Asia," who first introduced "K-pop" to the world. Aside from Korea, BoA opened the door in Japan and pioneered breaking into the U.S. market.
In addition, top Trot singer Lim Young Woong and "Nation's Pick" EXO Suho were selected as the main characters of the Popularity Award (domestic) and the Hallyu Grand Prize (overseas), respectively, which are selected by 100% fan votes.
32nd Seoul Music Awards' Impressive Artist Lineup, MCs, Presenters
The 32nd Seoul Music Awards (SMA 2023), which was held on January 19 at 7 pm KST officially closed the music industry in 2022!
On this day, the ceremony which took place at the KSPO Dome in Olympic Park, Songpa-gu, Seoul drew massive attention from K-pop fans around the world, as it is an awarding body where the best Korean stars that have shone in the music industry for the past year appeared.
On top of that, SMA which was established in 1990 is also among the prestigious music awards ceremonies that have been presenting Grand Prize (daesang) trophies for over 30 years of history; thus, the expectation is high for who would bring home the bacon this year.
The ceremony was then led by top stars including SHINee Minho, former Lovelyz Minjoo and Kim IlJoong as the show's MCs. An excellent lineup of presenters also joined the event, including Choi Jiwoo, Seo In Guk, Kim Bum, Ahn Bo Hyun, Kim Sowon (former Gfriend), Hwang Bo Ra and more.
Prior to the main event, a red carpet was first held, wherein the artists who were present were given the opportunity to flaunt their various charms and visuals, including their 'fits.
During the event, SMA 2023 also captured the eyes and ears of viewers with colorful and unique stages brought by K-pop artists who showed their best performances and releases last year including IVE, NCT Dream, Got The Beat, KARA, (G)-IDLE, Kep1er, Lapillus and more.
