'HYBE Disc Awards': GDA 2024 Under Fire for Awarding SEVENTEEN Digital Bonsang Instead of aespa

The GDA 2024 went under fire from K-pop stans, who believed that aespa deserved to win the Digital Bonsang award more than SEVENTEEN.

Earlier on January 6, the highly anticipated 38th Golden Disc Awards was held at the Jakarta International Stadium, in Indonesia. The ceremony was livestreamed through the help of JTBC2, featuring numerous K-pop artists who became the main highlights of the event.

During the main event, the GDA 2024 presented different awarding categories such as the Bonsangs for Digital Song, Album, alongside Disc Daesang, Song of the Year, and many more.

While many congratulated all the groups who won, some questioned the show's decision-making on one of its awards.

On January 7, netizens caused an uproar against the 2024 GDA for SEVENTEEN's claim on the Digital Song Bonsang. In an online community, netizens wondered why the 38th Golden Disc Awards gave the Digital Bonsang to SEVENTEEN instead of aespa.

The author uploaded an image, which showed the statistical prediction of GDA 2024's Digital Bonsang winners. OP's photo showcased the digital score would make up 60 percent, while the remaining 40 percent would be derived from judges.

According to the tabs, aespa's "Spicy" claimed No. 5 with a digital score of 32.88, while SEVENTEEN's "Super" placed No. 13 with a score of 26.13. OP remarked:

"They said they award groups based on their results, but they don't award a group if they don't attend. This was the Digital Bonsang.

aespa's 'Spicy' > SEVENTEEN's 'Super'

But SEVENTEEN won it anyway."

"Both NCT Dream and aespa got their awards taken away from them and both went to SEVENTEEN. Last year, Taeyeon's 'INVU' and Red Velvet's 'Feel My Rhythm' also got higher scores, but their awards were taken away and given to NewJeans' 'Attention.'"

Even for physical sales, SM, JYP, and YG (NCT, TWICE, EXO, TREASURE) all got beaten by HYBE, who received two extra awards.

Isn't HYBE Disc Awards way more severe than SM-A? What's more is that they usually had 8 Bonsangs, but this year, they got 10."

In the comments section, Korean netizens defended the win and expressed disdain over Pink Bloods. Read their comments below:

  •  "But people are just too much. If SM wins, people are f**king mocking them by saying 'did they buy off the judges?' but when other teams win they say, 'are judges' scores just for show?'"
  •  "Shouldn't you question the results regardless of what happened in SMA?"
  •  "SMA, who took the Daesang from others are more severe."

However, some K-netz, alongside international fans on a separate thread and X (Twitter) opposed the comments and called the netters out for defending HYBE as company "stans." Others drew out their frustration towards the results for being a "HYBE fest."

  •  "Even if NCT won Daesang at SMA, can't we just say they were robbed of the Bonsang at GDA?"
  •  "If the positions were reversed, all top posts would be hating on them and calling people 'SM cultists, SM-Roaches."
  •  "Mind you, aespa and Dream won Physical Bonsang yesterday without attending, but they were robbed for Digital Bonsang to the company groups."
  •  "Bunch of hypocritical company stans."
  •  "You guys should have the same energy when both companies are corrupt, daesang or not, HYBE rigged GDA."
  •  "You know, it's severe when HYBE's doing bribery over a f**king Bonsang."
  •  "Well obviously, 'Spicy' got robbed."
