Netflix scored its first-ever No. 1 theatrical film as KPop Demon Hunters topped the U.S. box office during a limited sing-along release, marking a historic moment for the streaming giant's evolving strategy.

The animated K-pop musical, which premiered on Netflix in June, earned an estimated $18 million to $20 million during a two-day theatrical run across more than 1,700 theaters nationwide, according to studio estimates.

Streaming Sensation to Box Office Hit

The film debuted on Netflix as an exclusive original, quickly becoming the platform's most-watched animated feature with more than 230 million views worldwide. Fueled by breakout songs such as "Golden" by fictional K-pop group HUNTR/X, the movie grew into a global pop culture phenomenon before hitting theaters for a sing-along event Aug. 23–24.

The screenings turned into fan gatherings, with audiences singing, dancing and cosplaying in what many described as a concert-like atmosphere. The surge in turnout pushed the movie to the top of the domestic box office, a first for Netflix after years of experimenting with theatrical distribution.

A Turning Point for Cinema

Industry analysts say the success highlights the power of fandom and the potential of hybrid release strategies, where films launch on streaming before moving into limited theatrical runs.

"KPop Demon Hunters proves that streaming hits can translate into box office winners when you give fans an experience they can't replicate at home," said one box office analyst.

The film, produced by Sony Pictures Animation and directed by Maggie Kang, has also drawn comparisons to major cultural crossovers like Frozen and Encanto for its music-driven storytelling and passionate audience response.

What Comes Next

The theatrical success could encourage Netflix to pursue similar event-style releases, especially for projects with strong fan bases. For now, KPop Demon Hunters continues to dominate both streaming charts and theaters, underscoring the growing influence of K-pop culture on global entertainment.
