Review: Baek A Yeon Lays Into the Cut On 'A Good Boy' [VIDEO]

There's nothing wrong with a guilty pleasure from time to time, in life or in music.

In fact, the best pop music often falls into the guilty pleasure category, simply because the best pop songs can speak to you no matter who you are, or who the song was supposed to be marketed to.

Songs like "Toxic" by Britney Spears or "We Are Young" by fun. are almost embarrassing to like, but they also just happen to be great songs.

We like them whether we want to or not.

Musical purists often miss out on some great moments in the history of pop music because the record label hype machines ruined it for them.

The way the music video for Baek A Yeon's "A Good Boy" is shot makes it clear the 20-year-old singer's record label is marketing mainly marketing to the tween and teen audience.

Yet with a surprisingly solid groove and Baek's vocals laid down right in the rhythmic pocket, "A Good Boy" is a song that people of all ages, shapes and sizes could really get into if they gave it a chance.

And while it might not be on the level of a "Toxic" or Fun's Grammy Award winning "We Are Young," Baek's new single is catchy and the playing is locked down.

The producer didn't feel the need to get carried away with endless layers of string orchestras or synthesizers.

In the main apex of the "A Good Boy," the final chorus, the guitar player provides all the fire needed for a powerful crescendo with a blistering distorted solo.

It's a song that will hopefully be able to break out of its Mandy Moore circa-1999 look in the video, because it really deserves to be heard.

A better artist for Baek's producers and management to shoot for (if they need to emulate anyone) would be that of Brandy (especially Brandy circa-1999).

Like Brandy, Baek has great rhythmic timing, and the ability to sing complicated vocal parts while still making them sound effortless and sincere.

The tones of the pairs' voices are even similar.

If they really wanted to get funky results, Baek's management could pair the singer up with former Brandy collaborator Timbaland.

In addition to Brandy, the South Korean singer bears a vocal resemblance to another legendary Timbaland collaborator--Aaliyah.
