Former "Superstar K" contestant Kim Ji Soo released his first album "A Beautiful Love" on Wednesday, a mellow collection of pop songs highlighting the singer's soaring falsetto.

Of all of the songs on the album, the track "Actress" is the most memorable, offering a solid hook and a vocal take that feels unforced and real.

With the sole rhythmic accompaniment of a few cymbal swells and no drumbeat, "Actress" instead relies on Kim's voice and some tasteful string flourishes to build the power of the song.

The singing throughout "A Beautiful Love" is reminiscent of American chart-toppers Frank Ocean and Robin Thicke in the strength of Kim's melodies and the inventive chord progressions.

But what both of those singers understand is the need for the beat to enter at some point.

Although, in Kim's defense, Thicke and Ocean are both artists working within the dance genre, an area the former reality show contestant may have little interest in.

But with the solid nature of the South Korean singer's vocal hooks, it's not hard to imagine the potential of a heavy beat coming in midway through "Actress" for example.

The song even comes close to dialing in the epically dark vibe of the opening strains of Ocean's "Pink Matter" featuring Outkast's Andre 3000.

Yet "Pink Matter" is a song that is taken to the next level with the deep drum groove and nasty bassline that enter in the second part of the song.

Kim Ji Soo has all the talent required to carry on as a competent ballad singer. But a smart manager would see the potential to take his soaring vocals into the dance realm.

Even the moments on "A Beautiful Love" that do have drums, like the single "Sleep 5 More Minutes" don't have the kind of crowd-pleasing big beat that Kim would need to counter the more mellow material.

With most of "A Beautiful Love" shows a more mature side of the artist, "Sleep 5 More Minutes" almost comes off sounding a bit childish.

But it is hard not to be charmed by the music video, which shows Kim popping up in as a series of television reporters, in a clip that clearly shows the singer has a lighter side.

What I'd like to hear is his funkier side.
