Roy Kim Apologizes To Fans For 'Spring Spring Spring' Plagiarism Scandal: 'I'm Very Sorry For Causing So Much Trouble' Star Says

Roy Kim says he is sorry that his song "Spring Spring Spring" ("Bom Bom Bom") has drawn plagiarism accusations.

In an interview published Monday by eNEWS, Roy said that he hoped to learn from the ordeal.

"I′m very sorry for causing so much trouble," Roy said. "I′ll work hard not to disappoint my fans with good music."

Plagiarism problems regarding Roy's chart topping single, began back in April.

Despite spending three weeks as the number one song on the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100, "Spring Spring Spring," was called too close to Kim Kwang Suk's "Where The Wind Blows" and A-ha's "Take On Me" by some critics and fans.

Yet the real bombshell came last week for Roy when comparisons arose to the ukulele version of Acoustic Rain's "Love is Canon," a song that is undeniably closer to "Spring Spring Spring."

An online poll conducted last week by the website Allkpop found that 63 percent of those surveyed believe Roy Kim plagiarized Acoustic Rain's "Love is Canon," a striking change from the A-ha and Kim Kwang Suk accusations, widely dismissed by fans and many media outlets alike.

But a representative for Roy's record label CJ E&M Music told the Seoul Broadcasting System news team that it is the "Superstar K4" winner who is the one being plagiarized.

"After officially confirming with the Korea Copyright Commission, the ukulele version of 'Love Is Canon' was revealed to have been registered on May 15, 2013, after Roy Kim's "Spring Spring Spring"'s release on April 22, 2013," said the record label rep.

"Thus, Roy Kim's "Spring Spring Spring" does not have anything to do with that version."

And what about the original version of Acoustic Rain's "Love is Cannon," registered with the South Korean copyright commission on March 2012, according to the news agency Nate?

"Experts have examined the parts that are said to match between the original version [of 'Love is Canon'] registered in March 2012 and ['Bom Bom Bom'] and decided that there is no plagiarism," the rep said.

Yet despite the controversy, Roy, who announced on Thursday that he will be returning to college in the US in August, says he has enjoyed his time in the spotlight.

"I′m happy I′ve been able to reach out to so many people through music," the star said.

"My father wanted me to become such a person when I grow up. Of course, he wanted me to do so through my studies, but after he saw that I was achieving that goal and spreading more positive energy through music, he started to show his support for me."

The "Superstar K4" competition winner recalled being genuinely shocked at his initial positive response from fans.

"I appeared [on 'Superstar K4'] because I like music and I did it because it made me happy, but so many people have been showing me their support," he said.

"I want to continue to work with music, and not forget what I was determined to do at first. It′s a great love that I won′t be able to repay in full in my entire lifetime."

And although he admitted that he is withdrawing from the spotlight to return to his studies at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business in Washington D.C., according to the website Soompi, Roy said he is thinking about his music in the long-term.

"It′s important to last long," he said. "I′ll work hard to sing music that will be good even if you listen to it 10 years from now, and influence my fans in a good way."
