Ruthless Part 1," the new EP by South Korean rapper DOK2, is for the most part over-produced, with the unfortunate production choice of Autotune on nearly every song.

Yet with the song "All I Know," DOK2 loses the Autotune and gets real. He also gets dark and even a bit spooky.

The result is a hard-hitting piece of raw, hip hop, complete with references in English to Thug Life-iconic rapper 2Pac's first band and a tribute to the gangsta ethos.

Both the beat on "All I Know" and the rapping over it offer a sound as dark as any horror film.

As DOK2 quietly sings the hook "this is all I know," over a theme that sounds like it is straight out of "Nightmare On Elm Street," with a funky drum beat thrown on top, you know you're into original territory.

There is a vibe dialed in on "All I Know" that is darker and more intense than virtually anything on the pop charts in Korea or elsewhere.

Yammo's rap in the last 90 seconds of "All I Know" is a pitch-perfect compliment to DOK2's more introspective flow.

Yammo sounds like a demented child lost in the strange violent dream world DOK2 Has created. Yet there is something revelatory in his rhymes that lift the song out of any chance of being morose or dipping into tedium.

Quite the contrary, between the self-conscious humor of Yammo's voice and the confident and deeply serious flow that DOK2 is laying down there is certainly enough happening in the overall sound picture to make "All I Know" worth a listen.

From the first harpsichord-simulated synthesizer strains of "All I Know," and the deeply reverberated sample of a woman saying "oh my god," DOK2 pours on he attitude, offering a rhyme flow that almost sounds bluesy as he seethes with angst and attitude.

Yet he pulls back when the music calls for it, it is the inventive music and original rhymes that sets "All I Know" as far and away the best track on "Ruthless Part 1."

So what will the future hold for DOK2?

That all depends on whether he knows "All I Know" is his best work to date.
