Review: Like A Song From A Dark 1980s Film, Lady Jane And Humming Urban Stereo's 'Bambi' Is Eerie, Evocative [AUDIO]

Although she is probably best known among K-pop fans as the longtime girlfriend of former Supreme Team rapper Simon D, 29-year-old South Korean singer Lady Jane proves she is a star in her own right with her new single "Bambi."

And while Simon D broke up with Lady Jane in June and his band Supreme Team broke up in July, Lady Jane's star appears to be on the rise.

Released on Thursday as a sort of B-side of to the new Lady Jane and Urban Humming Stereo single, the more melancholy "Diary," there is something somehow more haunting and, as a result, more engaging about the mid-tempo "Bambi."

Humming Urban Stereo who are featured on both "Diary" and "Bambi" conjure up a sound that is too produced to resemble traditional jazz, but yet undeniably has shades of West Coast swing.

But with its heavy echo and haunting melody, the song ends up resembling an eerie 1980s soundtrack.

"Bambi" would be right at home in a film like David Lynch's 1986 cult classic "Blue Velvet" about a man who finds a human ear on the ground and unravels a mystery he never wanted to be involved in.

For fans mostly familiar with the readymade-for-the-dance-floor beats of Humming Urban Stereo tracks like "Let's Stay Together," "Bambi" could come as a minor shock to the system.

Yet, what the song lacks in heavy beats, it makes up for with musicality and an enticingly dreamy vibe that draws the listener in and keeps you there.

And the cinematic quality of "Bambi" doesn't just lie in the music.

Lady Jane offers up a wounded tone in her vocals that is powerful without being overbearing.

She also brings a distinctly Korean sensibility to her phrasing and sound, way beyond the language she is singing in.

This is an effect that is interestingly compounded by the shape of the melody.

Blending the aforementioned strains of a dark jazz soundtrack to a film noir-ish 1980s film that was never made, with a sound resembling the folk melodies of her native countries Lady Jane has created something new here.

When the genre of a song is this difficult is to describe, it is almost a given that the artist is worth a listen. Such is the case with Lady Jane and Humming Urban Stereo's "Bambi."
