The 40-year-old actor and singer Ryu Shi Won was found guilty of threatening and illegally monitoring his wife in Seoul Central District Court on Tuesday, according to the website allkpop.

The court affirmed that a CD of audio recordings reportedly made by the famous actor's wife, Cho Soo, are as she alleges, a document of his physical and verbal abuse towards her.

"If you listen to the contents of the recorded CD which [Ryu Shi Won's] wife submitted, you can hear sounds of slapping skin," read the official court statement.

"It appears that he slapped her face very lightly."

And although Ryu is reportedly not facing physical assault charges, it was the evidence of the actor tracking his wife through GPS and then threatening her that led to his conviction.

"During the heated argument with his wife following his installing of the illegal tracking device, he hurled insulting remarks and mentioned that he could get people to watch her," the court statement read.

"Even if the chance of him putting his words into action is very slight, from the victim's point of view, it is enough for her to feel fear."

According to the Central District Court judge, Ryu went way too far in his surveillance practices.

"Even if he is her husband, there is no urgent need to install illegal tracking equipment on her car and cellphone, so it can not be seen as a justifiable act," the court decision read.

The actor and his wife are currently engaged in what have reportedly been contentious divorce proceedings.

Back in June, Ryu, released a statement to the South Korean publication Jong Ang Ilbo through his lawyer, admitting he had used a GPS to keep tabs on his wife, claiming it was an issue of safety.

"I only did it for the safety of my wife and young daughter," he said.

"I've never slapped my wife's cheeks. And although I lashed out in rough rants, it was merely a fight with words and there was no physical violence."

The actor, who has released over a dozen albums, starred in the 2012 television drama "Goodbye Dear Wife."

Ryu and Cho were married in 2010 and filed for divorce in 2012. The couple has a 2-year-old daughter.

In February, Cho filed a complaint with police claiming Ryu verbally and physically abused her.
