IU's 'The Red Shoes' Rockets To Number 1 On The Billboard K-Pop Hot 100: Inside The 'Modern Times' Top 10 Take Over

The Billboard K-pop Hot 100 is all about IU this week.

After a lukewarm debut last week that saw the album's best-selling single "The Red Shoes" only make it to number 28, IU's new album "Modern Times has taken over the Billboard K-pop chart, currently owning five of the top 10 spots.

"The Red Shoes" is at number one.

The jump in album sales for "Modern Times," IU's third full-length album, is striking.

The 20-year-old singer's track "Everybody Has Secrets" is at number three on the Billboard K-pop chart after debuting last week at number 40.

The song "50cm" is at number five, after charting at number 51, last week.

And the title track from "Modern Times" is at number 10, up from number 62.

IU's triumph on the charts is particularly noteworthy considering the eclectic sound of her new album.

"Modern Times" features jazz and samba beats a world apart from the electro-fueled dance or string-laden power ballads so synonymous with K-pop.

Like Busker Busker, who had themselves locked down the Billboard K-pop top 10 for the two weeks prior to this one, IU is an artist who has gone against the grain and been rewarded with resounding commercial success.

Perhaps K-pop fans don't want their music so homogenized after all.

Busker Busker managed to hold on to the number two spot on the Billboard chart with their smash single "Love, At First."

The song was number one for the last two weeks.

Despite the flurry of chart activity from IU and Busker Busker, 39-year-old singer Lim Chang Jung has managed to stay in the top five with his song "A Guy Like Me."

Jung write the lyrics for his hit single himself and composed the music with songwriter Baek Min Hyuk, responsible for the Baek Ji Young hit "Spring Rain."

"A Guy Like Me" is at number four.

"No. 9," the new single from controversial girl group T-ara debuts on the Billboard K-pop chart this week at number six.

"Touch Love" from the "Master's Sun" soundtrack continues to linger in the top 10 for Yoon Mi Rae. The song is at number eight this week.

Entering the chart at number nine this week is Jung Joon Young's "The Sense of an Ending."

The music video for the song features the singer's "We Got Married" co-star, Jung Yu Mi.
