Nintendo Suffers Operating Loss Of $300 Million Due To Wii U Sales: Could Pokemon, Zelda, Mario Transition To iOS And Android?

As the New Year begins, Nintendo is struggling to regroup after disastrous Wii U sales put the company at a loss for the fiscal year.

According to CNN, for the fiscal year ending in March, Nintendo is projecting an operating loss of 35 billion yen—or $335.2 million—a significant difference from the profit of 100 billion yen ($957.7 million) forecasted.

At its core, Nintendo is suffering both from stiff competition with Microsoft and Sony with its next-gen console releases, as well as competition with the iOS and Android devices.

After a recent article boasting the difficulties of producing games for the Wii U, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata appears to be planning a new direction for the company in order to sustain its viability.

“We are thinking about a new business structure. Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business. It’s not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone.”

This quote alludes to the possibility that popular Nintendo franchises like Zelda, Pokemon, or Mario could make their way to iOS or Android devices in addition to the Wii U or 3DS.

So far, fan reactions to the idea has been mixed.

"Some things in life should never go together. Pokemon and Apple/Windows are one of them," writes Lelouch on Pokejungle.

"That used to be said about Sonic and Mario, look where we are now," adds Vincent K.

If something like Pokemon, Zelda, or Mario arrived for the iPhone or Android, would you be excited and willing to try it out? Or, is Nintendo making another blunder after its Wii U debacle?
