Girls' Generation and 2NE1 Play the Waiting Game

The battle of the decade between two of Korea's greatest female idol groups is being called off. The epic battle between YG and SM Entertainment, as well as the facing off of 2NE1 and Girls' Generation, two groups who are distinctly different yet equally popular, is not going to happen.

The initial scenario went like this. SM Entertainment released information on February 12th that Girls' Generation will be digitally releasing their title song, "Mr.Mr" on February 19th. The mini-album would follow just five days later on February 24th. YG Entertainment released information the very next day that 2NE1's new album will be digitally released on February 24th. It was going to be an epic battle - that is, until SM Entertainment's video editing team damaged the data of Girls' Generation's music video for "Mr.Mr.".

The biggest event of 2014's K-Pop scene came to a screeching halt.

While the situation is being played as random happenstances that the release dates for the two groups overlapped and that Girls' Generation's video files were damaged, a deeper look may reveal a battle of wits between the two companies' CEO's.

For one, the general public is not buying SM's excuse that the music video file was damaged. It is almost impossible that a single video file being damaged would delay Girls' Generation's comeback. In the age of cloud computing, it doesn't seem likely that one of Korea's biggest companies would only have one copy of the music video to edit or enhance. It doesn't seem likely that they would let it affect them to the point of delaying Girls' Generation's comeback. The more likely explanation is that SM Entertainment lied to the public to gain a more advantageous position in the battle against YG.

To this opinion, YG's stance is that they simply wanted to release 2NE1's album prior to their concert on March 1st and 2nd. SM's stance is that they are going to release Girls' Generation's new single as soon as they can get the music video recovered.

The focus is now on the comeback date of Girls' Generation. To this effect, it is giving an advantage to Girls' Generation.

These turn of events, however, does not mean that the competition between the two groups is over yet. Girls' Generation's tentative comeback date is March 6th, while 2NE1 is planning on their comeback TV appearance on the second week of March. If SM Entertainment can make sure to have more than one copy of the "Mr.Mr." music video, we may see a duel between the two groups in the second week of March.
