China's Top Online Video Distributor Youku Buys Rights To '3 Days' Starring Yoochun Of JYJ For $50,000 Per Episode

The producers of the Seoul Broadcasting System drama "3 Days," starring Park Yoochun of the K-pop trio JYJ, got some exciting news on Wednesday, the same day the drama premiered on South Korean television.

China's leading online video company Youku announced they are purchasing distribution rights for "3 Days" at a rate of $50,000 per episode.

The sale price for the show's distribution rights is a new record for a Korean television drama, according to a spokesperson for the show's producers, Kim Yong Hoon.

"In the past, Chinese market price for a similar show would be less than $10,000 per episode," Kim told eNEWs on Wednesday.

"But '3 Days' was sold at a price five times more than that. After checking, we've confirmed that it's the highest price paid for any K-drama so far."

According to the producers' spokesperson, a drop in the value of Japanese currency has pushed China to the top of the list of interested parties able to shell out big bucks for the rights to Korean programming.

"The demand and price of K-dramas has been falling, due to Japan's conservative shift and the falling exchange rate of the Japanese yen," Kim said.

"But the gap has been filled, thanks to the Chinese market."

He added that Yoochun's celebrity status as a member of JYJ only adds value to the "3 Days" episodes.

"At the center of the show is a Hallyu star like Park Yoochun along with well-made drama content," Kim said.

At a press conference on Tuesday for "3 Days," the show's executive producer Kim Young Sup expressed his deep appreciation for Yoochun's tenacity during shooting,  despite several physical hardships.

"Actually, Park Yoochun is still struggling to film now," Kim said.

"He tore his [shoulder] ligament while he was filming an action scene, but has been continuing to film. He received acupuncture treatment and even has a physical therapist at the filming site. He also caught a cold as he filmed the movie 'Sea Fog' a few days ago."

"I am thankful for his hard work and dedication," he added.
