Yang Hyun Suk - "We Are YG Family"

In a world that is often marred by corporate greed, YG Entertainment is turning the tables in a refreshing way. On April 8th, YG Entertainment released news that they will give stock options to over 18 artists including Psy and Big Bang. This was one by CEO's Yang Hyun Suk and Yang Min Suk relinquishing some of their own stocks which allowed them to have a major stake in YG Entertainment. This it the first instance where an entertainment company gave the company's stocks to its artists.

YG was contacted for an interview following this news. While on the phone, he stated, "How do you think YG Entertainment became the powerhouse it is today? It's all thanks to our artists. I think it's a good way for us to encourage our artists to continue their great work with our company as well as thanking them for their hard work. I want our company to become even greater in the near future, and this is the first step toward that goal."

He continued, "We've always considered ourselves YG 'family', not YG 'corporation'. I'm not trying to be repetitive, but YG Entertainment's growth was completely because our artists worked extremely hard. It's impossible to think of YG Entertainment without them, so when the opportunity to share the wealth came, I immediately decided to go ahead with it."

When asked about being the richest man in the industry because of his shares, he shyly stated, "People say that I'm rich because of all the stocks that I have, but I never thought of it as my own money. You might think it's weird, but I've spent a lot of that money for our artists and their equipment because I believed that it was communal money."

He continued, "Someone told me that money is something that you hold for a moment for someone else. I agree with that. It's not like I can take the money with me when I die. I've been able to continue my music career thanks to talented individuals who joined me during the sixteen years I've spent after Seo Taiji and the Boys. People look at me as more of a businessman now, but I've never considered YG Entertainment as my personal cash cow. Some people say that I'm rich because of the land that I own, but I actually have never sold any property. I buy land according to my needs, not to be a prospector."

He added, "I spend all my energy on music, because I am responsible not only for our company but all the investors who have invested into our company."

When asked about YG's expansion into the global market, he commented, "I'm actually doing this for me, but now that we are entering into the global market as Korean artists, I feel like we've become the Korean representatives in a huge global market. It gives me a sense of responsibility. PSY, Big Bang, and 2NE1 are all reaching far into the global market, and we expect our upcoming rookies to follow that trend."

Yang Hyun Suk was also asked about Akdong Musician, who debuted this week. He stated, "I was scared more than happy when AkMu chose YG. They had a kind of organic and unfiltered sound that I didn't want YG to adulterate. I let them produce their own album, just providing them the music teachers and instruments that they needed. The final product was amazing. AkMu's new album is like a book of great poetry. It's refreshing. Their creativity and purity just blows me away."

He continued, "Their current success is all their own. There was nothing that YG did to enhance their success. Their success wasn't manufactured by YG at all. Manufactured success fades quickly, but I have a feeling that AkMu will be successful for a very long time."

Yang Hyun Suk also spoke on "K-Pop Star", an audition program that he is appearing as a judge. He said, "This week is the final week, and I'm not sure who will win. Bernard Park and Sam Kim are both phenomenal contestants, and I hope that they can produce the best stages of their lives. One thing is for sure, the future of K-Pop is very bright. There is so much talent in our youth."

He continued, "When I judge the contestants on the show, I tend to think and speak of what the general public might think because I lack the professional knowledge that Yoo Hee Yeol and Park Jin Young have. That might be the reason that many viewers tend to agree with me in most cases."

He added, "One thing that's always helped me in judging the contestants and my own artists is my 'feel' for music. It has almost never failed me. My 'feeling' for the future of K-Pop is that Korean music will allow for a bigger market in the global pop music industry. Take Psy's 'Gangnam Style'. I've recently checked his Youtube channel and saw that he was nearing two billion views. That's the equivalent of almost 30% of the world watching that music video. Now is the time for Korean music makers to try their hardest and make the push to make Korean music more distinct yet global."

The last question that Yang Hyun Suk was asked was about Big Bang. He spoke about them furtively, saying, "I did say that their album is due in the Summer of 2014, but to be honest, I'm like everyone else in that I am waiting for Big Bang to produce music that 'wow's their fans. I don't want to press them because sometimes that forces mediocre things to be presented to the fans. We will wait until they are ready with music that is better than ever."
