Ray Rice Video [Update]: Domestic Violence In Elevator Seen By NFL Executives In April? Commissioner Roger Goodell Says Footballer May Play Again

The topic of domestic violence in professional sports was pushed to the front of public consciousness on Monday, when TMZ released a stunning video of football player Ray Rice punching and knocking out his then fiancé, now wife, Janay Palmer in an elevator. His contract with the Baltimore Ravens was terminated, and NFL officials suspended him immediately. Commissioner Roger Goodell insisted at the time that no one in the league had seen the video before, but now, the Associated Press reports, a law enforcement official is claiming that he sent the video to the league in April. Meanwhile, Goodell says that there is a possibility that Rice could play again at some point in the future.

The AP reports that the official in question, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, played them a 12-second voicemail form April 9, in which a woman calling from an NFL number confirms that the video had arrived, and says, “You’re right. It’s terrible.” The source says he cannot confirm if any NFL executives watched the video at the time, because no one ever followed up.

Goodell has previously said that the NFL requested the video from law enforcement when first they launched their own but were never given access. He told CBS on Tuesday, “We assumed that there was a video. We asked for video. But we were never given the opportunity,” adding that, “I think they were under some legal requirements not to provide it.” The source confirms that he was not authorized to release the video to the NFL when he did, but says he shared it anyway, because he wanted them to see it before deciding Rice’s punishment.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello now says the league is “not aware of anyone in our office who possessed or saw the video before it was made public on Monday.” He says that they will “look into it.”

Before this latest story broke, Goodell had already stirred up some controversy during his CBS interview, when reporter Nora O’Donell asked if Rice would ever play in the NFL again. The Commissioner responded, “I don’t rule that out,” though he says Rice “would have to make sure that we are fully confident that he is addressing this issue clearly, [that] he has paid the price for the actions that he’s already taken.”
