Soma likes to experiment with food. He explores every ingredient on the menu and tweaks it from time to time. His father challenged him to go to a culinary academy to learn more about cooking. His father also told him that he should not lose to anyone if he still loses to him.

In the culinary academy, Shokugeki or cooking duel allows students to settle disputes and give up something if a party loses. The duel consists of an odd number of judges.

In the "Shokugeki No Soma" anime season 1 finale, Soma was placed under Hayama Akira during the autumn elections by only 1 point. But if Shokugeki rules were to be followed, Soma could have won because he got the majority of votes from the judges.
