Netflix Fuses Modern Zombie Thrills With Joseon Era Drama In 'Kingdom' Original Series

After the box office success of South Korean zombie film "Train To Busan", Koreans are about to embark on another major zombie endeavor, this time partnering with Netflix to deliver an eight-episode zombie show set in the Joseon era. Netflix has confirmed that it will be working with Korean production firm Astory on the series entitled "Kingdom."

According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, the series will be combining the concepts of the Korean period drama with that of modern concepts of zombie survival similar to that of "Train to Busan." According to synopsis, the series will revolve around a crown prince who is tasked with a mission to investigate a mysterious outbreak. The film will be set in the Joseon dynasty 1392-1910 which will combine the appeal and beauty Korean period drama cinematography with the grittiness and carnage that comes from dealing with the undead.

It has been confirmed that Signal writer Kim Eun Hee will write all eight episodes of the series. The writer expressed excitement over the project, saying that he has been working on the "Kingdom" concept since 2011, Deadline reported.

"I wanted to write a story that reflects the fears and anxiety of modern times but explored through the lens of a romantic fascination of the historical Joseon period," he said. "Working with Netflix helps us to unlock this creative vision for Kingdom."

Director Kim Seong-hun who helmed the 2016 survival film Tunnel has also been confirmed for the project. It is expected that his team up with Kim Eun Hee will more than deliver on the hopes of Netflix subscribers in 190 countries.

"Kingdom" will be the second Korean production confirmed by Netflix after "Love Alarm", based on a graphic novel by Kye Young Chon. Both "Kingdom" and "Love Alarm" are set for a 2018 release.
