Soyou Collaborates With a Labelmate in the ‘Starship Planet 2020 Carol’

Kang Ji-Hyun, popularly known as Sistar's Soyou, is ready to bring the Christmas cheer with her carol cover collaboration with other artists from her record label, Starship Entertainment.

In her December 16 vlog, titled "Starship Planet 2020 Carol. All the Best Guests We've Got," the Korean singer introduced her fans to other talents from the Starship Entertainment camp. Her short vlog first introduced the "only crossover group" in the talent management label, Duetto, which is composed of classical tenors Yoo Seulgi and Baek Intae. The tenors introduced themselves with a vocalization that shocked Soyou.

Soyou also tried singing her name in the same style and, while she succeeds, cuts her attempt with a burst of laughter. Her second partner candidate is the solo singer-songwriter Yoo Seung-Woo, who jokingly introduced himself as a rapper. Seung-Woo quipped: "You need people like Monsta X to get many views," to which Soyou responded that the Starship boy group is among the potential partners for her Christmas duet.

Following Yoo Seung-Woo is the much-anticipated Monsta X, represented by Kihyun who respectfully greeted the audience before admitting that he is also a subscriber of SOYOUGI, Soyou's YouTube channel. The Monsta X vocalist inquired about the other candidates and joked about being busy to be her partner.

She then ends the vlog with suspense, saying that she'll be announcing the results on the following day. Sure enough, GIROCKs - her name for her followers - were treated to a cover of the Nat King Cole classic "The Christmas Song," with none other than Yoo Seung-Woo, released December 17.

The holiday spirit fills their cover video with star-shaped lanterns in the background, with both artists in cozy sweaters. Yoo Seung-Woo provides the soft guitar accompaniment as they both deliver a mellow acoustic performance. Soyou even playfully keys on an imaginary piano as Seung-Woo performs a guitar solo.

After the heartwarming Christmas greeting to her beloved fans, Soyou also released the behind-the-scenes practice of their carol cover. She shared that her first choice was the Stevie Wonder song, "Someday at Christmas," followed by Sia's "Snowman," and finally Cole's Christmas classic.

"It feels like I'm back to being a trainee," Soyou gleefully recalls. Yoo Seung-Woo, currently signed under the Starship subsidiary Highline Entertainment, comments that they haven't done much yet.

As a song familiar to both artists, Seung-Woo immediately sampled the Nat King Cole single with his acoustic guitar. The practice session went smoothly, punctuated by casual conversations between the two artists. As a "post-credits" treat for GIROCKs, the two sang "No Sleep," Seung-Woo's single used in the 2016 period drama "Love in the Moonlight."

Kang Ji Hyun, before her debut as a K-Pop idol, was a licensed hairdresser with work at a hair salon. She was first known as a Cube Entertainment trainee originally intended to be a part of the girl group 4Minute. Soyou, however, made her debut as a member of Sistar in June 2010 and stayed with the group until its 2017 disbandment. She made her solo debut with the EP "Re:Born."
