Mnet Announces Plan to Launch Global Girl Group Project 'Girls Planet 999'

Mnet is gearing up to launch a new global project this year to debut a new girl group!

On Monday, Jan. 11, Mnet released some details for their upcoming girl group project called "Girls Planet 999." They shared that the show will involve participants from Korea, Japan, and China who have different languages and cultures but have the same dream of becoming an idol who will stand on the global stage.

The reality show is set to air at the end of this year, and will show the journey and growth of the girls as they head towards their dreams of becoming an idol in a virtual world called "Girls Planet." UNIVERSE, the newly-launched global fandom app developed by a game agency called NCSOFT will collaborate with the global project and provide the official platform for the program.

Aside from an array of digital content and services for fans, a global voting system for the final debut lineup will also take place in the app. Mnet, alongside NCSOFT, will produce content for global audiences and is planning to broadcast the reality show worldwide.

On the same day, Mnet has shared the first teaser for "Girls Planet 999" on its official SNS accounts. The video starts with a sentence from the book "Alice in Wonderland," which reads, "Every adventure requires a first step." A girl walks across a wide snowy field while the narrator shares, "There is still an unknown world for us. A whole new world beyond the limit of space, without boundaries. This is a story about the girls' first steps as they take on the challenge to aim for their dreams."

Together with texts that read, "The new world where dream becomes reality" and "Connect the girls' world," three girls shown being linked to each other on a mysterious planet.

Eligible applicants for the global girl group project are the ones born before Jan. 1, 2006, and can either be normal citizens, part of an entertainment agency or have already made their debut before. Additionally, applications who are not Korean, Japanese, or Chinese can still apply, only if they have connections to one of the three countries through their residency or company.

Applications will be accepted until Feb. 21. More details about the qualifications and instructions to apply can be found on their website.

Mnet's "Girl Planet 999" is the female version of their previous boy group project called "I-LAND," in partnership with Belift Lab, a joint-record label established by Big Hit Entertainment and CJ E&M. The reality show, which aired from June to September last year, involves 22 participants that were transported to a complex called I-LAND where they stayed for a total of 113 days. At the complex, the trainees' skills were tested.

Viewers had a huge role in the program as they were the ones who chose the top 12 who will stay in I-LAND. The remaining contestants will compete with each other for the final debut team of seven members. The winning team is now called ENHYPEN.
