2021 MAMA Changes Judging Method, Strengthening K-Pop Fan Voting

2021 MAMA to Change Judging Method
Mnet revealed the changes before the "2021 MAMA Nomination Announcement" on November 3.
For the selection of the awardees, artists and works that contributed to the development of K-pop this year are chosen by different indicators and expert judges. The artists who led this year's K-Pop trend will be chosen with the participation of K-pop fans worldwide.
The evaluation will be carried out by dividing the awards into selected categories.
"Singer of the Year," "Song of the Year," and "Album of the Year" are three of the four grand prizes. However, the awards, genre and sales volume of the albums of each artists will be taken into consideration by a jury, which is comprised of experts.

One of the four grand prizes, "Worldwide Icon of the Year," and the main prize "Worldwide Fans' Choice Top 10," will determine the nominees and final winners based on the popularity evaluation that reflects the voices of K-pop fans from all over the world.
The 2021 MAMA is reflected by adding the data from Apple Music, a global music platform served in 167 countries all over the world.

Last year, Gaon Chart music data was also reflected in the evaluation. However, to actively reflect the global influence of K-pop in the evaluation, global indicators are also introduced to the music and album sales.
Furthermore, a global K-pop expert jury composed of people from the music industry is also reinforced to show the tendencies and trends of global K-pop fans with the judging.
An external organization, "Samil PwC," conducts the inspection of the collected data and process and also the tally of the evaluation.
Worldwide K-pop Fans to Contribute to 2021 MAMA's Judging Method
The worldwide voting will be conducted twice: a vote to select the "Worldwide Fan's Choice Top 10" (pre-vote) and a main vote to confirm the "Worldwide Fan's Choice Top 10."
Candidate selection voting (pre-vote) will be held from 6 PM (KST) on November 4 at the MAMA Official website, Apple Music, and Twitter.
Not only that but this year, the "professional category," which awards the music experts in Asia annually, will also be expanded to include music experts in each field who have key contributions to K-pop's development.
It is explained that Mnet will secure fairness by balancing popularity, work quality, and artist evaluation by launching a new screening method fitting for the screening sector.
CJ ENM Music Contents Headquarters Director Kim Hyun-soo stated that MAMA has changed the award division and method in order to reflect the trends in the global music market.
Meanwhile, the 2021 MAMA nomination will be broadcast on Mnet on November 3 at 11 PM (KST) and on November 4 at 5 PM (rebroadcast).
