KBS World Radio Announces the Artists Selected as 'Artist of the Year,' 'Boy Group of the Year,' 'Girl Group of the Year,' and More

BTS Crowned as the 'Artist of the Year' and 'Boy Group of the Year' Based on KBS World Radio's Year-End Survey for 2021

From Nov. 22 to Dec. 6, KBS World Radio held an online year-end survey to determine which artists dominated 2021. The candidates for each category were based on Music Bank's results accumulated from November 2020 to October 2021.

A total of 1.22 million people from 2018 countries participated in the survey.

According to the results, BTS ranked No. 1 in the "Artist of the Year" category with 24.98% of votes. This is the sixth consecutive year that the septet has topped the category since the survey was first conducted in 2016.

BTS also claimed the "Boy Group of the Year" title after gaining 47.15% of votes. Unfortunately, BTS failed to take the top spot in "Best Song of the Year."

Nevertheless, they had three entries inside the Top 5 of the "Best Song of the Year" category and it is none other than their global English hits "Butter" (2nd), "Permission to Dance" (4th) and "Dynamite" (5th).

TWICE Wins the "Girl Group of the Year" and "Song of the Year" Titles from KBS World Radio Year-End Survey for 2021

In the "Girl Group of the Year" category, TWICE grabbed first place with 36.82% of votes. The nonet was followed by ITZY and BLACKPINK in second and third places respectively.

TWICE members showed various sides of themselves this year by releasing albums in different genres. They also showcased their growth as an artist as they directly participated in the creation of their new works. In particular, some of the members wrote and composed tracks for their albums.

One of TWICE's songs that made a mark this year is their bossa nova and hip-hop song "Alcohol-Free," which was released during the summer season. This track is loved for its catchy chorus that includes names of sweet cocktails and wines that listeners can easily sing to.

As a matter of fact, TWICE's "Alcohol-Free" secured first place in the "Song of the Year" category from KBS World Radio's year-end survey, outdoing BTS' "Butter."

IU is the 'Solo Artist of the Year,' According to KBS World Radio's Year-End Survey for 2021

Finally, IU is the soloist who placed first in the "Solo Artist of the Year" category with 37.18% of votes. Coming behind her, Red Velvet Wendy ranked No. 2 (with 18.23% of votes) and BLACKPINK Rosé ranked No. 3 (with 11% of votes).

IU proved her title as one of the top soloists in Korea with her new hit songs "Celebrity," "LILAC," "Strawberry Moon" and more. Like her previous music releases, these songs quickly rose to the top of domestic music charts after its release, attaining certified all-kill and perfect all-kill.

Moreover, these songs earned IU more trophies at different music shows in Korea. Notably, IU has become the Korean soloist with the most music show wins in history. As of April, she has taken home a total of 85 trophies, breaking Kim Gun Mo's record of 84 wins.
