5+ K-pop Idols Who Filed Lawsuit Against Agency They Were Under

Over the years, several K-pop idols have filed lawsuits against their company, which not all artists can do due to things like drama or fear. While there are singers who chose not to speak publicly against their agencies, there are some who were more vocal about their bad experience under the label.

Here are some K-pop idols who filed a lawsuit against their companies.

5+ K-pop Idols Who Filed Lawsuit Against Agency They Were Under

JYJ Members

JYJ members are arguably among the K-pop idols popular known for suing their agency, SM Entertainment. Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu- who were TVXQ members at that time- filed a lawsuit against SM in July 2009 due to their slave contracts, which would last for 13 years.

The idols also argued that the terms of profit distribution were unilaterally and unfairly disadvantageous toward the artists. The lawsuit ended in 2017 with the final court stating that a slave contract never existed.

Former EXO Kris, Luhan, & Tao

Another set of three K-pop group members who sued SM Entertainment is Kris, Luhan, and Tao, who were all part of EXO. These three filed a lawsuit to terminate their contracts with the company.

While they filed at a different time, they had the same reason for wanting their contracts terminated. They all felt that the label was mistreating them and that their health wasn't a priority.

Moreover, the boys felt that SM was restricting them from doing activities they would like to do, including acting.

Former WANNA ONE Kang Daniel

Kang Daniel is also an example of a K-pop idol who filed a lawsuit against his company. His reason behind this is he wants to terminate his contract with LM Entertainment.

In a message that he posted on his fancafe, Daniel revealed that he asked LM to transfer access to his social media accounts to him so that he can update fans and show a better side of himself, but the label refused to do so. The dispute between the two lasted for many months, and Kang even ended up getting depressed because of it.

Former WANNA ONE Lai Kuanlin

Another former WANNA ONE member on our list is Lai Kuanlin. He filed a lawsuit against CUBE Entertainment to terminate his contract after he alleged that the agency signed contract deals with third parties without his consent.

The lawsuit was dismissed by the court in November 2019, and was followed by an appeal from Kuanlin's side. But the appeal was rejected in May 2020, and so the idol and his legal team once again filed a lawsuit against CUBE in the same month.

In 2017, male soloist Kim Samuel filed a lawsuit against Brave Entertainment due to the CEO using him for his own personal gain. Samuel's lawyer said that the CEO used the artist to promote a business that he has a personal stake in. In addition to that, Brave Entertainment allegedly failed to present proper documents about the earnings and spendings concerning Kim.

Former SECRET Hyosung

Apart from male idols, there are also some female K-pop idols who sued their companies. One of them is former SECRET member Hyosung. She filed a lawsuit against TS Entertainment in 2017, mainly because of unreceived payments and the label transferring content of her contract to other agencies without her being aware of it.

Hyosung then won the legal battle and her contract was soon terminated.

These are just a few of the K-pop idols who sued their companies, so if you know other artists, comment down below!
