The K-pop industry, known for its global appeal and polished image, has faced significant controversies this year, ranging from cultural insensitivity to exploitation concerns. These incidents have sparked widespread debate among fans, critics, and industry insiders.
The following are the most significant controversies that have hit the K-pop industry so far in 2025.
Cultural Appropriation by Kiss of Life
One of the most talked-about controversies involved the girl group Kiss of Life. The group faced backlash after hosting a hip-hop-themed livestream party on April 2, where members dressed in exaggerated hip-hop attire and used pseudo-Black accents. Critics accused them of mocking Black culture and perpetuating stereotypes.
Despite apologies issued by their agency, S2 Entertainment, and the members themselves, the incident led to a loss of over 200,000 followers on Instagram and intensified calls for cultural sensitivity training within the K-pop industry.
Blackpink's N-Word Scandal
Another major controversy centered around Blackpink after old audition videos surfaced showing members Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa using the N-word while singing along to song lyrics. Although these events occurred before their debut, fans and critics demanded accountability from both the group and their agency, YG Entertainment.
Exploitation Concerns in "Under15"
The audition show "Under15" drew fierce criticism for featuring contestants as young as eight years old performing provocative routines. Promotional materials showcasing minors in heavy makeup and revealing outfits sparked outrage over the sexualization of children. The backlash led to the cancellation of the show before its premiere on March 31. Critics condemned the program for reducing young participants to "products" marketed for public consumption.
Poaching Allegations
The industry also saw escalating disputes over poaching allegations. SM Entertainment accused rapper MC Mong and Cha Ga-won of tampering with EXO-CBX members amid their legal battle over contracts. Similar accusations arose involving other groups like Omega X and Fifty Fifty.
NewJeans
One major ongoing issue is the legal dispute between NewJeans and their agency, Ador, a subsidiary of HYBE. The group announced their departure from Ador in late 2024, citing alleged mistreatment and contract breaches. Member Hanni testified before the National Assembly about workplace harassment and bullying. This conflict has led to public debates about contract validity, artist rights, and the power dynamics between agencies and idols. The case has also fueled accusations of "tampering," where artists are allegedly encouraged to break contracts and sign with new agencies.
