I did not know that f(x) member Amber is Taiwanese. It definitely is quite rewarding to learn something about K-Pop members and on how diverse they are.  For example, Super Junior, they are a group that is mixed with Chinese and Korean members. And there's boy group EXO, who you probably don't need me to introduce. Another group is Skarf which is composed of members that are from Singapore who are Ferlyn and Tasha. So, it looks like K-Pop is looking for talented members from other parts of Asia and are mixing it up by not only having Korean members. This is great because it is good to have different members from other countries because it shows that the Korean entertainment industry is open to other countries by looking for talented singers.

Who is Amber Liu and When Did She Start with the Group?

Let's talk about who Amber Liu is in-case you do not know who she is. Amber Liu like mentioned earlier, is Taiwanese though was born in Los Angeles, California. She is 21 years old and is part of the SM Entertainment group, f(x), which is also composed of Krystal, Sulli, Victoria, and Luna. Also, just to throw in some information about Victoria, she is not Korean as well. So the group has members from other parts of Asia as well.

So when did this talented singer and rapper get noticed by SM Entertainment? Well it was when she auditioned for the SM Entertainment Los Angeles Global Audition in the year 2008. They loved what they saw in Amber and knew that she was talented and quickly put her on a plane to South Korea to initiate her rigorous training. Amber was so excited during that year and knew what she was going to get herself into with the training that she had to go through. She has prevailed as evidenced by her singing as well as rapping skills. Amber has passed all of the training and gained numerous fans in Los Angeles, Taipei, and of course South Korea.

But, wait, is she a tomboy?

Now when you see Amber, notice the way she dresses and the style she chooses. While all of her other members wear a skirt, heels, and dress, Amber likes to dress up like a tomboy by wearing shorts, shirt, and sneakers. Plus, her hair is like a guy. Fans of f(x) may be wondering why Amber dresses like this and perhaps wondered whether she is really a tomboy. The fact is, she is every bit a girl and just likes to make herself unique and different from her other group members.

Just look at Amber for their song "NU Abo." While all of her members were wearing heels, Miss Liu chose shoes instead. Amber looked like a punk boy with the blue jacket while the other ladies looked actually like females with their long hair and style of wardrobe for the music video.

Now we move to summer where it is hot and ladies are supposed to show-off their sexy side by wearing heels and a nice dress. The music video for "Hot Summer" showed Krystal, Sulli, Victoria, and Luna dressed as what you will see ladies in South Korea wear during the summer. But not Amber, she went for what you will see males wear during this season which is shoes, shorts, and a button up shirt.

For "Rum Pum Pum Pum," you see once again  that Amber is wearing a boyish wardrobe by wearing a hat and shorts. While she does have a little make-up, it is not too much compared to her other members. She does wear a Scottish tartan, but can that really pass for a skirt and qualify her as 'feminine'?

Why She Dresses Like This

The reason why Amber dresses like this is because she wants to be unique and tell her fans as well as the entire group that ladies can dress anyway they want in-which they feel comfortable.  In her interview with Los Angeles Weekly, Amber said,  "I hear that I dress like a boy and that I should be more girly, which I can understand, but I just focus on what I want to do and enjoy my time with fans who love me for who I am."

Well said Amber, loving you for who you are is what exactly people should care about the most. While you do not dress up like a woman, fans can understand that you want to choose clothes that a male will wear which is totally fine for me because guys can get a perspective on how to dress by the style of clothing that Amber wears. Basically, while the other members show the fashion for females, you see the style for males. Truly fine for us Amber.

Another reason why Amber dresses up like this is because while she was growing up in Los Angeles, she was used to wearing clothes that were very loose and not too tight which she stated by saying, "I grew up playing a lot of sports, [and] thus tying up your hair and wearing comfortable clothing was a must." So she is different from the other females by playing with the boys and likes getting dirty. One thing that she loved doing before getting into the K-Pop entertainment industry was that she really loved skateboarding.  She even said that cutting her hair felt liberating, "I finally chopped off my ponytail at the end of middle school, and it was the best decision I made." Looks like Amber will not be at the sidelines cheering for a boyfriend.  Instead, she will be playing in the game.

Amber is definitely unique and stands out from the other K-Pop idols with her awesome dancing and boyish looks.

Below are other videos in-which you can enjoy from f(x) as well as see more of Amber and her unique style.  And funny now that we look at this, even when she was featured with Henry''s upbeat "1-4-3, I Love You" as his duet partner, she still chose to dress up like a boy.  Well that's Amber to you, she'll go for comfort than convention.
