[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] Popular Indonesian Pop Group Nidji Wants to Collaborate With Rico Blanco, Big Bang, JYP; Exclaims They Are Big Fans Of Big Bang

Coming to Sundown Festival all the way from Indonesia was the region's fastest growing band, Nidji (meaning 'rainbow' in Japanese). Like their name, the six-man ensemble consisting of Giring, Adri, Ariel, Run-D, Rama and Andro, is all about bringing colour and authenticity to their brand of pop alternative music. They have played more than 350 gigs to sell-out audience who swoon over their hits like Child, Hapuskan Aku and Biarlah.

The band, who has been together for more than twelve years, is still keen in making music. During the interview, they showed their lively personality and close-knit friendship with one another. Seeing as how playful they got with each other, it is no surprise they have developed a very strong and dedicated fan base. Through the interview, the boys of Nidji discussed various issues, including fan culture in different countries, K-Pop and their future goals.

KPopstarz: Welcome back to Singapore! This is not your first time performing in Singapore. How does it feel to finally come back here again?

Giring: This is actually our third time performing in Singapore. But it is our first time performing in a very big festival and in front of a large audience. I have always felt that Singapore is our second home. We've come here a lot of time, for holidays, concerts and such. Me, Andro and Rama just came for the F1 concert watching The Killers and Rihanna. Actually my sister also lives here so it's very good to be here again. We are very excited for tomorrow, though pretty unsure of how the reactions of fans would be like. (laughs)

KPopstarz: You have released an English version of an album before, are there any plans to do it again in the future?

Giring: Maybe, but we are not sure yet. We just released "Liberty and Victory" two weeks ago which is a double album, one in Bahasa Indonesia and one in English. From the moment with Manchester United, there has been a huge demand for the six of us to do soundtracks and theme songs. Actually we miss making our own albums, just for us, our fifth album. For the past two years, we're doing themes and movie soundtracks, so it would be good for us to work on our album again.

KPopstarz: If you were to do your own album, do you have any concepts or ideas in your mind right now?

Giring: Plenty! We would love to collaborate with other musicians actually. Not in terms of singing, but more in terms of composing. We would like to collaborate with famous song writers. For example, in Indonesia there are a lot of good song writers. Internationally, I actually like Rico Blanco's songs; he's really good at composing.

Andro: To be honest, we really love Big Bang! Especially G-Dragon! And JYP is a good song-writer too! (laughs) We did not manage to catch them on the F1 concert though.

KPopstarz: What is one thing different about fans in Indonesia and fans overseas?

Giring: Well, the fans overseas are wilder and crazier. Fans in Indonesia see us all the time, in television and we have performed all across Indonesia so they're a bit calmer. However, fans from Malaysia and Singapore are very different. I think it is because it's very rare to meet us and watch us perform so they are definitely more enthusiastic.

KPopstarz: What is one crazy thing that your fans have done that left a big impression on you?

Giring: There is one very kinky impression I remember. There was this one time we performed in Malaysia, and there was this girl, who I think was pretty drunk, started screaming pretty weird stuffs (laughs) and uploaded it on Youtube. It was very funny. Actually, Malaysia fans are very thoughtful and creative. They are always giving us cakes and stuffs even when it is not our birthdays sometimes.

Andro: They actually celebrated my birthday once!

KPopstarz: You are already very famous for your amazing voices. Are there other projects that you would love to try like acting, or composing?

Giring: A few of our members have done acting before. Actually we would want to act together in a movie, our own project. Maybe it would release next year? We're still building it up.

KPopstarz: What is your motto that you live by?

Giring: Bully him (Run-D) and be happy! During the press conference, did you hear what he said? Everyone was saying nice things about each other, but when it comes to him he said some weird stuff about me! We've been high school buddies for fifteen years, and that is the only thing that he remembers of me. (laughs) I love you man! That is why I think we've been together for twelve years. It's because we've been through a lot. We've been through the ups and downs, through all the "rock star" syndromes. After all these, we just fell in love with each other all over again. Whenever we create a song or an album, I would think to myself 'This is the most awesome band in the whole world.' So we start to not be bothered by our popularity and just stick together.

KPopstarz: What are your favourite songs right now?

Andro: Our songs, "Shadows" and "Heavens" are very nice. They are the theme songs for Heroes, Season 1 and 3 respectively. It's really nice.

KPopstarz: What are your goals for 2014?

Giring: Maybe a movie from the whole group and a new album. We have done a lot of video clips and video commercials. So I think it would be fun for us to actually do a movie together, the six of us.

After the interview, Andro even showed his interest in K-Pop girl group, AOA, who was set to perform in Sundown Festival too by exclaiming that they are really very pretty. Throughout the whole interview, we are able to see how the six members of Nidji have developed their close-knit friendship and are awaiting for future releases from them.
