Review: Beenzino Samples Jazz, Name-Drops Modern Artists And Gets Classy On 'Dali, Van, Picasso' [AUDIO]

In the height of the gangsta rap in the late 1980s and early 1990s it seemed a remote possibility that hip-hop artists would become society's cultural elite.

Yet as the 1990s saw acts from De La Soul to Wu Tang Clan create some of the era's most stunning musical passages, the following decade saw artists like Jay-Z and Kanye West herald a new era of the hip-hop icon-the style king.

Riding this crest of fashionable hip-hop artists the last decade has produced is South Korean rapper Beenzino, with his new single "Dali, Van, Picasso."

In shouting out classic 20th century painters Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso, Beenzino is entering territory few hip-hop artists dare to tread.

The gamble appears to have paid off.

Critically acclaimed but with a mixed record on the charts, Beenzino has scored a top 10 hit with "Dali, Van, Picasso."

The song entered the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 this week at number seven.

"Dali, Van, Picasso" is easily the rawest jam to top the charts this week, with a beat that doesn't just feature a classic jazz 1960s piano feel in the sample, but echoes the classic hip-hop production of 1990 innovators like Digable Planets and Tribe Called Quest.

It's not hard to understand why "Dali, Van, Picasso" is making a big splash on the K-pop charts.

While dreamy and musically hip, it still grooves in a solidly satisfying way almost like that moment at the club when your drink finally starts to do what it's supposed to and the DJ finally plays the song that you wanted him to.

When the music stops on Beenzino's new single, it is jarring as you're catapulted back into reality.

The easiest remedy is just to press play on "Dali, Van, Picasso" one more time.
