On June 8, several claims reported that BLACKPINK Jennie had chosen to join the cast of "The Idol" without YG Entertainment's aid, as announced by news outlet TenAsia on June 7.
According to an official, Jennie met in person with popular singer The Weeknd and expressed her willingness to join the show. "Jennie received an offer to join the drama show when she met The Weeknd in person," the official stated.
It continued, "We are fully aware that Jennie had communicated her desire to tackle this project."

"The Idol" is Jennie's debut acting project, where she went by with her actress name Jennie Ruby Jane. Jennie plays the role of Diane, who serves as a backup dancer for the protagonist Jocelyn, who is played by lead actress Lily-Rose Depp. The show also includes the appearances of The Weeknd, Troye Sivan, Dan Levy, and more.

It began as early as July 17, 2022, when people accused Jennie of cultural appropriation during a dance scene on its teaser trailer. On the scene, Jennie was spotted in cornrows, drawing criticism from netizens.

When the show finally premiered, Jennie also received mixed reactions in a scene, where she danced and acted passionately. On June 5, netizens criticized Jennie's "controversial" dance scene due to her expressions and gestures.
International fans drew in favorable compliments for Jennie, as they stated that the artist had slayed her scenes. Meanwhile, Korean netizens were uncomfortable with her sequences and even wondered why Jennie decided to take on a "risqué" show as her debut drama project.
