Why Super Junior's Heechul Won't Appear In An SM Entertainment TV Drama: 'Actors Are Directed...Like Singers!'

Kim Heechul's band Super Junior may be signed to SM Entertainment, but that doesn't mean the star would agree to appear in one of the South Korean television dramas the record label has produced.

In Thursday's episode of the Joongang Tongyang Broadcasting Company talk show "Ssulzun," Heechul claimed he wouldn't even consider acting in a drama produced by his record label.

"I have said before I would never appear in a SM-produced drama," said the 30-year-old Super Junior singer.

"SM Entertainment is split with a singing and acting team, but the actors are directed and promoted like they're singers."

Heechul was responding to a question about the SM Entertainment-produced television drama "To The Beautiful," starring SHINee's Minho and Sulli of the girl group f(x), which has failed to generate significant ratings numbers, according to the publication eNEWS.

Both of the actors' bands are, as you might expect, from the SM Entertainment roster.

Heechul told Park that although he appreciates that the executives at his record label want to promote their artists, by giving all of the leading roles on their dramas to pop stars with little or no acting experience, the quality of the program is compromised.

"I'm thankful that our company thinks, 'our kids are the best. If our kids do it, it'll be good,'" the singer explained. "So even in our music videos, actors from other places don't come out. [The executives feel] 'why would we use anyone else when our kids are so pretty and handsome?'"

"So they're given both the male and female lead?" co-host Park Ji Yoon asked.

"How could that work?" Heechul said, agreeing it was a ridiculous production choice.

The Super Junior star joined the panel of co-hosts on "Ssulzun" last month.

Heechul, who just completed a two-year mandatory military enlistment in the South Korean Army back in August, said he plans to bring a dose of honesty to the program, along with an insider's perspective on the world of K-pop.

"I like programs that are strong and challenging," Heechul said. "I can't attack any idols, but I will criticize them."
