Discourse Around Nude Photo Leak Then And Now: Vanessa Hudgens And Other Victim No Longer Held At Fault, Emma Watson Condemns Hackers

When a hacker released Vanessa Hudgens’ nude photos seven years ago, the 18-year-old ‘High School Musical’ star was held responsible. Angry moms called her a terrible influence for their kids. Disney made her publicly apologize for the pictures she took. But now, the discourse around nude photo leak has changed from putting the blaming on the victim to looking to prosecute the hackers.

This isn’t the first time that Vanessa Hudgens has been the victim of hacking. Her first nude photo scandal took place right when she had gained a lot of fame from the massively successful ‘High School Musical’.

Back then, Disney, to appease the angry moms, made Vanessa publicly apologize for taking the photos.

“I want to apologize to my fans, whose support and trust means the world to me,” she said at the time according to Hollywood Life. “I am embarrassed over this situation and regret having ever taken these photos.”

Now, the language around the nude photo leaks has totally changed. Instead of putting the victim at fault for taking nude photos, critics are saying that women should have the freedom of taking whatever kinds of pictures they want. The hacker that invaded the privacy of these women should be the ones prosecuted.

Emma Watson, who has launched #HeForShe campaign to promote feminism in both men and women, even spoke out about the horrendous nature of hacking and invasion of privacy.

Vanessa Hudgens is one of the many victims of nude photo leak, which includes Jennifer Lawrence, Kirsten Dunst and Kim Kardashian.

Critics are now seeking legal action against the hackers. Even the FBI agreed to get involved.

According to the US Magazine, “a representative for the Federal Bureau of Investigation told the Associated Press on Monday, Sept. 1, that the agency was "aware of the allegations concerning computer intrusions and the unlawful release of material involving high profile individuals, and is addressing the matter."

Victim blaming never solved anything. Seeing the discourse around nude photo leak change is reassuring sign that the society is changing, slowly, for the better.
