If fans were hoping for a lighter road ahead for "Pretty Little Liars" after the reveal of "A," shippers around the world might be bemoaning the "5 Years Forward" special which aired last night.

As noted by recaps posted online, the "Pretty Little Liars: 5 Years Forward" special updated fans on each of the Liars after leaving for college. What's been a shock is that none of the major couples (Aria and Ezra, Toby and Spencer, Hanna and Caleb, Emily and Paige) survive or rekindle their relationships during the five-year time jump.

"It seems a bit forced that all [the] couples break up," commented Ann on TVLine.

Reportedly, Hanna and Aria are in new relationships. Aria has fallen for a new character named Liam Greene (portrayed by Roberto Aguire), a "handsome editorial assistant from Boston" who is a "sweet and doting professional."

But Hanna has the truly big news, as she is now engaged to a new man, who we've seen glimpses of in earlier promos.

"I'm excited for her to have this new chapter in her life," said Ashley Benson.

But as viewers took note during the special, it is Emily is purported to have the biggest secret coming back to Rosewood five years later. Some fans have theories as to what that secret may be.

"She probably had a baby and gave her/him for adoption like in the books," commented reddit user Viudanegra.

A popular theory that's emerging about the "Pretty Little Liars" characters is that the series of break-ups will leave room for new pairing to emerge, like Spencer and Caleb.

On Friday, a new promo for the "Pretty Little Liars" Season 6B Winter Premiere surfaced online. Within the promo, fans can catch a brief moment that appears to be Toby punching Caleb.

"Do I dare make the leap that a Caleb-Spencer hookup could be in the cards?" theorized TVLine contributor Andy Swift.
