Prior to the formal announcement of each member, SM Entertainment gave fans a glimpse into the four members of Aespa through the 2020 World Cultural Industry Forum. At the time, only members Winter and Karina were formally announced as members, with their teasers having been released two days prior and a day prior, respectively.

SM Entertainment is known for having only visual idols. The company is acknowledged for seeking beautiful faces and having a keen eye for young aspiring artists with beautiful faces. Some of the most famous female visuals that debuted under SM Entertainment is S.E.S's Eugene, Girls' Generation's Yoona, and Red Velvet's Irene.

When all of the faces of the girls were revealed, netizens couldn't help but share their disappointment over their looks. Netizens are claiming the girls have no visual members and that they had such high expectations for an SM Entertainment group. Some of the, well, nicer comments compliment Winter, calling her the only visual member of the group.

Read netizens' comments here:

"Aespa has no visual members."

"The visuals are much worse than I thought"

"No visual members at all... I had higher expectations since they are an SM Entertainment girl group."

"Only Winter is pretty..."

"Wow... This is the first time I am disappointed with the visuals of an SM Entertainment girl group."

The group has been in the spotlight ever since they were announced. The group has slightly controversial trainee Yoo Jimin, who now goes by the name of Karina. Prior to her addition to the line-up, Karina was under fire for allegedly talking badly about NCT (specifically Shotaro and Sungchan) BTS (specifically Jimin and RM), and EXO. She was also accused of being rude to Kai during a photoshoot commercial.

At the time, SM Entertainment threatened legal action against those spreading false information and malicious comments against her.

The group also has Ningning, who was announced as a member of SM Rookies in 2016 and has been training under the company for over four years. Many netizens were against her addition to the group, as she is Chinese. Korean netizens claimed that they do not want any more Chinese idols to debut, claiming Chinese idols distort the history of the Korean War and spread propaganda about it, all while gaining fame in South Korea.

It is rumored that Ningning will be the main vocal of the group, to which netizens are strongly opposed. Many believe the main vocalist should be a Korean, just in case she chooses to leave the group and return to China. They also questioned her skills and her Korean pronunciation.

On October 29, SM Entertainment dropped the teasers for the fourth member, Aeri, now known as Giselle. She is rumored to be Korean-Japanese. When her teasers dropped, Korean netizens voiced out that they hoped she was Korean, as they do not want to see any more foreign members in K-pop groups.
