Sowon was born as Kim So Jung on December 7, 1995, in Seoul, South Korea.
In 2010, Sowon began to train under DSP Media, where she spent four years harnessing her skills. This was followed by her inclusion in Source Music on the year 2013, when she would join GFRIEND, one of the most known household names in K-pop.
On January 15, 2015, GFRIEND officially debuted with their first mini album "Season of Glass," and title track "Glass Bead." The final lineup included Sowon (Kim So Jung), Yerin (Jung Yerin), Eunha (Jung Eunbi), Yuju (Choi Yuna), SinB (Hwang Eunbi), and Umji (Kim Ye Won).

When they made their debut, Sowon became the group's leader because of her good sense of judgement, mature personality, and leadership skills.
GFRIEND would later on become popular with their synchronized choreography, and their discography that contained orchestral elements. The group has released iconic songs such as "Me Gustas Tu," "Rough," "Time for the Moon Night," "Sunrise," and "Fever."

Apart from being a K-pop idol, Sowon also engaged in extra activities by guesting on various television shows and modeling.
In July 2018, Sowon made her first TV show appearance as host on the "Look at Me" beauty program. The idol also made her runway modeling debut for D-ANTIDOTE on Seoul Fashion Week.
On November 9, 2020, GFRIEND released their third and final full-length album "Walpurgis Night," together with its disco title track "MAGO."
GFRIEND's disbandment was announced by Source Music on May 18, stating how their group activities would be concluded after their contracts' expiration. On May 19, Sowon and the other members left everyone in tears with their handwritten letters that addressed the disbandment.
This led the idol to establish a solo career by pursuing acting. Sowon then signed an exclusive contract with IOK Company on August 2, 2021, but left on August 5, 2022. Sowon would later join OUI Entertainment under the new stage name Kim Sowon.

On her post on August 5, the idol-turned actress uploaded a reunion photo with all GFRIEND members, who appeared to be enjoying a meal together. Sowon is seen holding out peace signs, visibly content due to the reunion with her former bandmates.
Buddies (GFRIEND's fandom) were understandably shocked with the picture. Thanks to Sowon's and the members' update, fans were grateful to know that GFRIEND is still intact with each other despite going their separate ways.
