'Girls Planet 999' Chinese Group's Cover of ITZY 'WANNABE' Records Highest YouTube Views among Episode 1 Performances

The cover video of ITZY's "WANNABE" by one of the Chinese groups currently has the highest YouTube views among the performances from the "Girls Planet 999" Episode 1.

On Aug. 6, Mnet's "Girls Planet 999" aired its first episode, where the 99 contestants performed in front of the MC and Masters. Each performance of the units from the K, J, and C groups was then uploaded to Mnet's official YouTube channel on the following day.

"Girls Planet 999" C-Group's Cover of ITZY "WANNABE" Garners Highest YouTube Views among Episode 1 Stages

In the "Girls Planet 999" Episode 1, the 33 girls from each group: K (Korean), J, (Japanese), and C (Chinese) were divided into units to perform their preferred K-pop songs.

Among the 33 girls from the C-Group, five of them covered one of ITZY's hit songs, "WANNABE." They are Leung Cheukying (C03), Wu Tammy (C04), Li Yiman (C11), Poon Wingchi (C20), and Li Shuyun (C29).

From these five "Girls Planet 999" contestants, Wu Tammy was the only one who was mentioned as a candidate for the Top 9.

On YouTube, the C-Group's cover of ITZY's "WANNABE" surpassed 880,000 views as of 5:40 p.m. KST on Aug. 9, recording the highest number of views among the performances in "Girls Planet 999" Episode 1.

As of 8:30 p.m. KST on the same day, the video extended its record by exceeding 900,000 YouTube views. The unit consisting of the five trainees is one of the only two units from "Girls Planet 999" C-Group to surpass 500,000 views on the platform, with the other one being a cover video of IZ*ONE's "Violeta."

The only other unit from a different group to reach 500,000 YouTube views is a unit from J-Group, which covered BLACKPINK's "BOOMBAYAH."

In addition to the views, netizens flooded the comment section of the "Girls Planet 999" C-Group's cover of ITZY's "WANNABE."

Netizens complimented the five Chinese trainees: Leung Cheukying (C03), Wu Tammy (C04), Li Yiman (C11), Poon Wingchi (C20), and Li Shuyun (C29). They cited the fact that their live singing is not that bad considering that they are dancing a hard choreography.

"Girls Planet 999" Episode 1 Overview

In the first episode of Mnet's "Girls Planet 999," the contestants performed in front of other trainees, host Yeo Jin Goo, K-pop mentors Tiffany and Sunmi, and the other Masters.

Yeo Jin Goo also revealed that all 99 girls will be divided into three cells, each composing of a Korean, Japanese, and Chinese contestant. Groupings are based on a range of characteristics that the three girls have in common, such as personal interests and type of career.

"Girls Planet 999" MC Yeo Jin Goo continued that a cell of three girls can either move to the next round together or they will be eliminated together. He added that if a girl makes it to the "Planet Top 9," they will be given the freedom to reorganize cells.

"Girls Planet 999" Episode 1 concluded with K-group contestant Yujin (from the girl group CLC) about to perform HyunA's "Bubble Pop."
